We lit our first Advent candle today …
George, come and see!
Happy First Advent Sunday!
May’s comment: Advent comes from the Latin word ‘adventus‘ – a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas.
A candle is lit each subsequent week until the last Sunday before Christmas – when all four candles are lit.
According to some, each candle symbolises a virtue. The first candle symbolises expectation. The second is hope, the third joy and the fourth candle is purity. Some advent wreaths have five candles – the last one in the middle which is lit on the eve of Christmas or the morning of – a reminder that Jesus is the light of the world.
