Hi, I’m George.

I once wandered the streets of Hungary, seeking food and shelter from the harsh elements of nature. One day, I was captured by an agency tasked with removing stray dogs. This led me to a Killing Station, where I faced the grim possibility of being put on death row if no one claimed me within two weeks. Fortunately, a local shelter came to rescue dogs like me who could be rehomed.

I was spared from the threat of euthanasia, as well as the potential for abuse or starvation. I received proper care, including cleaning, vaccinations, and preparation for adoption. With my scruffy appearance, I struggled to find a home and was scheduled to be left behind on the next transport to the UK, as only those who were adopted or fostered could make the journey.

However, a last-minute request from Hilda, the founder of Hungary Hearts Dog Rescue, to my future Mum changed everything. I was able to join the transporter van and begin my journey to a new life. I arrived in South Mimms service station, on 18 September 2014. As I watched an excited and anxious human running towards my cage, I extended my paw, and it’s safe to say, I had her at hello. From that moment I knew I had her at “hello” … and we all know how the story unfolds.

Curious about my heritage, Mum conducted a DNA test on me, revealing that I am a mix of Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, and Shih-Tzu, making me a unique terrier cross.

Originally named Bobo, Mum soon renamed me George, after Clooney, because my soft brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair reminded her of him. I met Darcy, who tolerated me for years, though I knew deep down she loved me, even if she wouldn’t quite admit it. Together, we formed a pack, and for nine wonderful years, we were nearly inseparable companions, exploring almost everywhere together.

Due to my past as a street dog, I still harbour some grudges, particularly against trucks, motorbikes, and certain large dogs, which can trigger my resource guarding instincts. Nevertheless, I am very much a dog that prefers the company of humans.
I miss Darcy. Some day we will be together again. But for now, I have a new sister, Lulu who came from China. She will tell you her story.

Hungary Hearts Dog Rescue is a registered UK charity that has rehomed dogs from Hungary since 2012.
