A Royal Cuppa

IMG_9713

It’s less than three weeks till the Coronation of King Charles III. London is getting ready …

And nothing like a good cuppa tea in four-legged, fine bone china style … paws at the ready to raise your mug to the new King, and sip some tea!

Designed by the wonderful and talented Alice (@dogdogcatsdogs) who has a particular soft spot for the King Charles Spaniel. When she was 8, little Buddy, a black & tan King Charles, joined her family and lived to the grand old age of 15. She was absolutely adored and is still missed to this day.

The fine bone China mug design includes one of each King Charles Spaniel colour way – Blenheim, Tricolour, Black & Tan and Ruby.

They are thought to have originated in East Asia, the King Charles Spaniel (also known as the English Toy Spaniel) was first seen in Europe during the 16th century. They became linked with English royalty in the time of Queen Mary I and were made famous by their association with King Charles II. Members of the breed were owned by Queen Victoria (Dash) and her great-granddaughter Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia.

Each Spaniel on the mug is wearing The St Edward’s Crown – the most important and sacred of all the crowns in The Crown Jewels.  It is only used at the moment of crowning itself.

The crown was made for the coronation of Charles II to replace the medieval crown melted down by parliamentarians in 1649, after the execution of King Charles I. The magnificent solid gold frame weighs 2.23kg (nearly 5lbs) and is adorned with semi-precious stones.

St Edward’s Crown was last used for crowning Elizabeth II in 1953.

There’s a little crown inside the rim of the mug, and a beautiful paw print stamp on the bottom too, with Alice’s website address and the name of the manufacturer, Duchess China.

Duchess China 1888 Ltd in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK is in the heart of the World’s ceramic industry and also manufacturers of the Royal Collection.

And there are Coronation Tea Towels too!

You can commemorate this historical event with your own mug and tea towel from Alice’s website www.dogsdogscatsdogs or message her Instagram account – @dogsdogscatsdogs. They are also available on Etsy.
