A Weekend in Cambridge

Cambridge, a city set along the picturesque River Cam, is best known for its prestigious University of Cambridge and its wealth of historic sites and iconic activities.

We’ve visited Cambridge on a couple of day trips. Once, we went punting with, Darcy and George—an adventure that took an unexpected turn when George, in his excitement, decided to chase after some ducks and ended up taking an unplanned dip in the river! On another occasion, we were there for a photoshoot—where else could one find such a stunning backdrop of historic, iconic sites?

When the Gonville Hotel in Cambridge invited us for an extended stay, we eagerly embraced the opportunity to explore the city in greater depth.

We meandered through the cobbled streets, soaking in the sights of storied buildings that whisper tales of centuries past. The morning light brings Cambridge to life, and particularly advised for avoiding the tourist crowds that do come in bus loads by mid-morning.

No visit to Cambridge is complete without a punting experience on the River Cam. For over a century, hiring a flat-bottomed boat has been a cherished tradition. One of the best aspects of a punting tour is the unique perspective it offers because the River Cam winds through the heart of Cambridge, giving you up-close views of some of the city’s most famous landmarks –

• King’s College Chapel, one of the most renowned buildings in the world and famed for its choir and towering Gothic chapel

• Trinity College, founded by Henry VIII, boasts notable alumni such as Sir Isaac Newton and several British Prime Ministers

• St. John’s College, with its 16th-century Great Gate, is home to the famous Bridge of Sighs, a covered bridge that beautifully spans the Cam

• the Mathematical Bridge, an engineering marvel at Queens’ College. This wooden bridge, known for its architectural ingenuity, has long been the subject of myths and legends about its construction.

We opted for a guided tour with the Traditional Punting Company, because they allow dogs on it.

During our stay, we were also treated to a chauffeur-driven tour in the Gonville Hotel’s Bentley, expertly guided by their Head Chauffeur, Zane. We glided through the charming streets of Cambridge and ventured out to the picturesque village of Grantchester, soaking in the bucolic beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Upon returning to the hotel, we indulged in a delightful afternoon tea with our friends visiting from London.

The Gonville Hotel, with its blend of classic elegance and modern comfort, provided the perfect setting for a relaxing and memorable experience.

In the evening, we sat in the garden and enjoyed a meal while listening to live music.

As you wander through Cambridge, be sure to seek out these local gems:

• Bould Brothers Coffee: A must-stop for coffee lovers. Brothers Max and Alex have over a decade of experience in specialty coffee, and their meticulous attention to detail has made Bould Brothers a standout.

• Jack’s Gelato: As you stroll through the cobbled streets, keep an eye out for the crowd gathered outside this shop on Bene’t Street. Jack’s Gelato is renowned for its handmade ice creams and sorbets, with flavors that change monthly, each more incredible than the last.

• Fitzbillies: A Cambridge institution since 1920, located on Trumpington Street, famous for its Chelsea Buns. Despite the name, there’s no real connection to Chelsea, but these buns, baked by hand 362 days a year, are legendary. Head baker Gill Abbs has been crafting them since 1971, and it’s estimated she’s made over five million buns—each one a buttery, sweet delight.

• The Eagle Pub: A historic pub in the city center, famously linked to Watson and Crick’s discovery of the structure of DNA. It’s a must-visit for history buffs and those looking to soak in the atmosphere of one of Cambridge’s most storied establishments.

Cambridge is a wonderfully walkable city, but if you need transportation, be aware that dog-friendly taxis are scarce. We tried Uber Pet, though be prepared for potentially high prices.
