Behind the Shop

Meet Jenny Matthews: the owner, founder and curator behind Love My Human

Once upon a time, I had a dream.

I wanted to create the most beautifully curated retail space for dogs, inspired by a shop I had discovered in Düsseldorf. In my imagination, it wouldn’t be another pet shop stacked with bags of dog food, plastic toys, and rows of practical necessities.

I imagined something beautiful. A place where everything had been chosen with an eye for design, beautifully made collars and leads, stylish bowls, thoughtfully selected accessories and things you wouldn’t necessarily find in an ordinary pet shop.

But I had no retail experience and, perhaps more importantly, not the funds to make it happen. So it remained a dream.

And then one day, a new shop appeared near us.

Love My Human.

I remember walking in and thinking: Someone has created the shop I had imagined.

It was exquisite. This wasn’t simply somewhere to buy things for your dog. It felt curated. There were beautiful pieces I hadn’t seen elsewhere, interesting brands and products that seemed to have been selected as much for their design as for their purpose.

Even the name was different.

And behind it all was Jenny Matthews.

Then, as if Love My Human wasn’t enough, along came Love My Human Townhouse, taking the idea beyond retail and creating an entirely different kind of space for dogs and the people who love them.

So for Behind the Shop, I wanted to go back to the very beginning and ask Jenny something I’ve wondered ever since I first walked through those doors.
