Cotswolds Escape

There’s something special about escaping the city with your friends, and in our case, our dogs, too. After a long winter, five of us packed up and headed for a couple of days in the Cotswolds, ready to trade busy schedules for fresh air, rolling hills, and a slower pace of life.

We stayed at Coniston House in Stow-on-the-Wold, a charming market town perched high in the countryside. From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a postcard: honey-stone cottages, winding streets, and that unmistakable calm you only seem to find outside the city.

The Cotswolds is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in south-central England, stretching across counties including Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire.

Despite its peaceful, tucked-away feel, it’s incredibly easy to reach, around a two-hour drive from London, which makes it perfect for a weekend escape. The region is known for its gently rolling “wolds,” historic villages, and the warm, golden limestone that gives its cottages that iconic glow.

The beauty of the Cotswolds isn’t just surface-level; it’s deeply rooted in its past. During the Middle Ages, the region flourished thanks to the wool trade, with Cotswold sheep producing some of the finest wool in Europe.

This prosperity funded the building of grand churches and beautiful homes, many of which still stand today. The use of locally quarried Cotswold limestone is what gives the villages their distinctive honey-coloured charm.

Back at Coniston House, mornings were slow and easy, dogs padding in and out, and no real agenda.

Our days unfolded naturally into long, cosy pub lunches filled with conversation, golden hour walks through quiet lanes and open fields, and evenings that stretched comfortably late.

One of the highlights was a dreamy dinner at The Wild Rabbit, a beautifully designed countryside pub known for its seasonal, locally sourced food. It was the kind of place you settle into and never quite want to leave.

One of the best things about the Cotswolds is how easy it is to drive from village to village, each one offering something slightly different.

We spent time in Lower Slaughter, often described as one of the prettiest villages in England. With its shallow river, stone cottages, and quiet pathways, it felt almost dreamlike, peaceful in a way that makes you instinctively slow down.

We also spent time in the beautiful village of Barnsley, which quickly became a highlight of the trip.

Lunch at The Village Pub was everything you want from a Cotswolds pub, relaxed, cosy, and effortlessly done, with great food and that welcoming countryside atmosphere. And seeing an old friend, Sarah L. with Charlie.

Afterwards, we wandered over to The Pig Hotel, (formerly Barnsley House) a charming country house hotel known for its “garden-to-plate” philosophy. Even just exploring the grounds felt special, rustic details, and that laid-back luxury.

Those spontaneous drives became some of the most memorable moments of the trip, as we discovered hidden corners and postcard-perfect views along the way.

We also stopped at Daylesford Organic in Kingham, more than just a farm shop, it’s a beautifully curated organic farm, café, and lifestyle destination.

It’s the perfect place to pick up fresh pastries, seasonal produce, and artisanal goods, enjoy a relaxed brunch or coffee, and browse thoughtfully designed homeware and gifts. And we found our favourite dog food there too!

It captures that blend of countryside simplicity and elevated living that the Cotswolds does so well.

Of course, the dogs were very much part of the adventure, and they embraced it fully. From countryside walks to village strolls, they were just as happy as we were to be out of the city.

And that’s really what this trip was about:
Slowing down, breathing deeply, and enjoying the simple things, good food, beautiful surroundings, and time with people (and pups) you love.

This little Cotswolds escape was exactly what we needed after winter, a gentle reset wrapped in fresh air, golden light, and easy companionship.

If you’re looking for somewhere to pause, unwind, and soak up a slower pace of life, the Cotswolds delivers it effortlessly.

A place that feels timeless, comforting, and just a little bit magical.
