Molly, a 10-year-old Jack Russell was stolen by burglars in 2008 from her home in County Durham, along with her four-day-old litter of pups.
In late July this year, the police in Warwickshire were alerted to dogs running loose on the street. Molly was among them.
She was found badly emaciated and her teeth were in poor condition. As Molly was chipped, the police officers were able to trace her owners, Brian and Pauline Berry.
Only then did they learn the Molly had been reported missing from her home in County Durham seven years ago.
Mr Berry, a 68-year-old retired car mechanic said: “When my wife had the call from the police, we just couldn’t believe it – and neither could they.
“At first I think the police thought she said Molly had gone missing seven weeks ago, and she had to repeat herself.”
PC Natasha Susnik, of Warwickshire Police, added: “This story really highlights the importance of getting your pets micro-chipped, and making sure that their details are registered and kept up to date.“
May’s comment: Police are still investigating where the dog has been for the past seven years. No arrests have been made yet.
I hope this is encouraging news to those whose dogs have been stolen or lost. Seven years is a very long heart-ache but Molly’s back to where she belongs – thanks to the info on her microchip.
Having them chipped has a greater chance of identifying them and tracing them back to you than not. Fingers crossed to all those who are missing their furry members of the family.
