Yummy, my tummy!

One of Lulu’s most distinct characteristics is greed. That probably explained why she was a bulging 5.1 kg when she was at the shelter. She gorged her food and probably ate everyone else’s portion. She managed to get down to 4.75 kg when she arrived in London. Our vet would like to see her at 4 kg but Mum was worried about starving her.

Very soon after Lulu arrived, we eased her to Honey’s Raw. Well, let’s say she kept wanting George’s food instead of the tinned food Mum was asked to feed her. She knows the good stuff!

When speaking to Jonathan from Honey’s, he suggested we trial their bespoke menu. They created a pre-portioned 50g meals of raw using a lower fat/calorie recipe (lean duck, organic chicken, organic pork, organic beef, rabbit, goat, lean turkey)with vegetables to help with the need to lose a few grams. Lulu has two of these a day.

And after a month of eating the bespoke recipe – we are seeing some result and she is on her way to a healthy weight.

The last time when Mum weighed her, she had shed 3.5g!!!

All this will be better for her joints and her heart as she is not a young dog. The first few weeks when we were out walking, she panted all the way – to the point that Mum was concerned she could have heart failure. These days she gallops into the flat after a walk right to the kitchen waiting for her bedtime treat. And she can now jump on and off Darcy’s low armchair. And this week, we caught her jumping onto the sofa! What will she be able to do next?

May’s comment: I don’t think she’ll be able to jump on the bed – even George has difficulty sometimes. And that is OK because it doesn’t do their joints any favours.

We go back a long way with Honey’s Real Dog Food, as I have been feeding all my dogs raw since Darcy was two.

Honey’s Real Dog Food has long been a provider of organic raw food for dogs, offering a natural and wholesome alternative to traditional dog food options. They’re made with carefully selected organic ingredients, ensuring that your dog receives a nutritionally balanced diet. Their recipes feature high-quality, human-grade meat, nutrient-rich vegetables, and natural supplements that support optimal canine health.

Raw feeding mimics a dog’s natural diet and offers numerous benefits. Raw food retains more nutrients compared to heavily processed alternatives, contributing to improved digestion, healthier skin and coat, increased energy levels, and better overall well-being. Just from two months of feeding raw, I can feel a change in Lulu’s hair. Her hair was quite coarse when she arrived and now her hair is a lot softer.

When I told Jonathan, the founder of Honey’s Real Dog Food about Lulu, and my concerns regarding her weight issue, he suggested that we try their bespoke menu, that would be tailored to her needs.

As every dog is unique, and their nutritional requirements may vary, Honey’s Real Dog Food offer a variety of diet options to suit different dog breeds, sizes, and sensitivities. Whether your dog requires a specific protein source, has food allergies, or needs a weight management plan, they can tailor their meals accordingly to the precise nutrients they need for optimal health.

While raw feeding may sound cumbersome, they make it easy and convenient. They offer a range of pre-packaged meals, taking the guesswork out of portion sizes and ingredient ratios. Their packages come in easy-to-store containers, making mealtime preparation a breeze.

Also, knowing where your pet’s food comes from is crucial. Honey’s Real Dog Food prides itself on transparency and traceability. They source their ingredients from trusted suppliers and ensure full traceability, so you know exactly what goes into each meal. The company is committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety, providing pet owners with peace of mind.

The Honey’s Bespoke option is more expensive than their traditional range, but the goal is to ensure that George and Lulu remain fit and healthy and eat the optimum diet with plenty of variety whiles losing the required amount of weight.

The bespoke choice provides:

  • a wider selection of lower-fat recipes (chicken, pork, lean duck, lean turkey, goat, rabbit, beef)
  • and future option of other lean meats such as pheasant, venison, buffalo, ostrich, emu and kangaroo for additional variety
  • the ability to adjust the portions in any way required as George and Lulu’s weight changes
  • the capacity to make up special recipes if recommended by their vet nutritionist
  • additional support and the option to make as many adjustments to the diet as required.
