Dear Ryan Air, a few days ago we saw this photo of the Armed Forces dogs in a plane altogether with their humans. In our doggy dreams we have been dreaming of a day when this will be possible for us civilians.
We wish and wish and wish that maybe someday, some wonderful airline would consider letting us pooches fly with our humans.
So often we get left when our families go on holidays abroad because it is too difficult to take us. Many have driven miles and miles and miles just so we pooches can join our families over the summer.
Ryan Air, I am a cockapoo. I weigh under 10kg and I have flown in several of the European airlines sitting in a bag on Mummy’s lap. It was never a problem for any of the passengers.
In fact I brought a lot of smiles to other passengers and my Mummy struck up a lot of conversations. But each time we flew, we had to cross over to the continent to fly from mainly Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. We flew from there to Stockholm, Milan and Malta.
But most of the time, when we travelled to the continent, we would take the train or ferry to get to wherever we needed to go. We sometimes spent more time travelling than where we were going.
I’ve travelled once in the hold to New York and I didn’t like it. I was very stressed out and I was away from my Mummy for a very, very long time. When I got to New York, I cried and I cried because I was afraid and I didn’t know where I was. My crate was all wet because they spilled the water that they left for me. It was about 14 hours since I last saw Mummy and I needed to go pee. So Mummy said she would never do this to me again. So she had tried many, many ways to get me on the plane. And each time she always held her breath praying that nothing would go wrong – and sometimes I almost did not get on.
But if you should consider letting us on the plane, we have lots of ideas on how it can work out for everyone.
Of course, there will be humans who would prefer not to have us on board. Some say they are allergic to us.
Maybe you can limit the number of pooches per flight and we can all sit in the back rows – you know how there was once a upon a time when humans could smoke on planes – and the smokers all sat in the back rows. That’s one way – so for anyone who cannot stand dogs, they can all sit in the front. Or you can limit certain flights for us to fly so those humans with allergies can be aware and not fly those flights that allow dogs on board. We’re not fussy – we can work around your schedules.
You probably want to trial flying with small dogs first but please don’t make them too small because that would limit a lot of us.
I know non-dog owners worry about us poo-ing and pee-ing – but most of the time we are house trained. There will always be accidents but it will be the responsibility of the owners to manage those accidents – just like babies and children and even grown-ups can get sick on airplanes. And if the humans do not take responsibility – then they can be penalised.
And of course you worry about dogs moulting but not all dogs moult. It’s ok we can all just sit on the floor.
While small dogs can stay in bags, maybe medium-sized dogs if allowed on must all be on leads as most of us won’t be able to get inside bags.
Our humans say they are very happy to pay full fare for us to fly.
Please Mr. David O’Brien, please speak to us pooches and our humans and we can give you lots of ideas and suggestions on how they can work. You will make a lot of people and pooches very, very happy
May’s comment: Daily Mail – Ruff Landings ahead – This article is the best hope yet for dogs travelling by air from the UK. I have never flown Ryanair but if they ever get around to doing this, I will forever be loyal to them and go on holiday with my pooches to all their destinations. We just need to be able to get out and into the UK easily. It can be done if someone gave it some thought.
Please share and have people comment to Ryanair. Tell them what you think. Or just leave messages on their Facebook page.

I go to Glasgow every 8 weeks May, and have to leave Maggie behind. If I have to take her, I have to drive, which takes anything from 8 to 10 hours or more! I’ll certainly share but although Maggie is classed as a medium sized dig, she weighs 15kg as she is long in the body, so hopefully they would consider size rather than weight. Here’s hoping!
We hope Ryanair can take up the challenge and they can do a trial run to see for themselves how well trained our dogs are.
Reading with interest as this would be so wonderful to take our Cavapoo Alfie George to Spain. However it’s not an airline issue – it is a DEFRA ruling. We need to find a way to lobby them to reconsider. Any ideas?
DEFRA is just one of the issues and if Ryanair wants to attempt letting dogs fly into the Uk – then they can figure it out like how we can bring dogs through Eurotunnel and on the ferry. Dogs can already fly out of the UK – Lufthansa and Swiss Air for example does that.
Good morning, you and D’Arcy and George would be ideal to trial this idea as your little girl and boy are used to travelling and would be excellent ambassadors for a project of this type. Good luck. X ps Gracie being a lab/springer cross would def be too big in their eyes although the military dogs are usually labs and German Shepherds.
The same for the ferry’s. I would love to go on holiday in Scotland, but don’t want to leave my dogs all evening and night in a crate. This year we have been to Crufts and had to drive all day, while the show is next to the airport, but I don’t want to crate my dog. We use the eurotunnel to cross
