In Memory of the Brown Terrier

One day as we were walking around Battersea Park, we took the shaded leafy path by the Old English Garden.

Tucked away amongst the leafy walk we came across this statue of a dog.

When Mummy stopped to read it – it’s a monument that replaced an original monument in memory of the Brown Dog which was erected by public subscriptions in Latchmere Recreation Ground, Battersea, in 1906.

The Brown Dog suffered at the hands of vivisectors – and generated much protest and mass demonstrations. This monument is dedicated to the continuing struggle to end these practices.

The plaque says –

In Memory of the Brown Terrier

Dog Done to Death in the Laboratories

of University College in February

1903 after having endured Vivisection

extending over more than Two Months

and having been handed over from

one Vivsector to Another

Till Death came to his Release

Also in Memory of the 232 dogs Vivisected …

May’s comment: Heartbreaking to read and to imagine what suffering Brown Dog went through. But also at the beauty of people who cared enough to stand up for animal rights.
