Question is – do I wag my tail more to the right or to the left? Mummy’s been watching me wag my tail and she can’t figure it out! It needs to be from my perspective. Neuroscientists have deciphered that happy dogs wag their tail more to the right and nervous dogs have a more dominant swish to the left.
That’s a right wag – by millimetres!
Sometimes my tail looks more like a mushroom!
May’s comment: This is according to research by a group of neuroscientists from the University of Trento.
Prof Georgio Vallortigara, said: “It is very well known in humans that the left and right side of the brain are differently involved in stimuli that invokes positive or negative emotions.
“Here we attempted to look at it in other species.”
He added that just as in humans, for dogs the right side of the brain was responsible for left-handed movement and vice versa, and the two hemispheres played different roles in emotions.
