Our main gallery wall in our bedroom is almost full!
But there was space for a piece of fine art …
Martine had gifted this to us in memory of Darcy’s second heavenly birthday (which is this coming Sunday) … our very own Masterpooch!
May’s comment: We love this addition to our Gallery Wall. Martine kindly painted this “Masterpiece” for us. We wanted to ask Martine if she could tell us more about her artworks.
I have always loved art and painting from a very early age. I enjoy the end result. I also enjoy the space I go to mentally when I am painting. It’s quite cathartic and meditative.
What inspires you to paint? Many things, from other artists work, museums, articles in magazines, gardens and places I visit.
How did you begin painting these Masterpieces or Masterpooches? The Masterpooch collection started when I was attending an art class and we were asked to paint something inspired by a famous artist and I came across the Gustav Klimt’s “Mother and Child” painting and thought I would re-interpret the picture with my dog Rusty. Especially as the mother looked somewhat like myself.
After that I thought it would be fun to re-invent other fine art portraits with dogs so I painted Johannes Vermeer “Dog with Pearl Earring”.
| I have also painted a Walasse Ting’s “Bouquet with Cockerpoo”. I love the bright colours he used in his paintings and I am also very fond of Asian art. I recently painted a version of Keith Haring’s “New York” where the green people have been swapped for green dogs. |
Most recently I painted a Toulouse Lautrec using a beagle.
It’s great fun recreating these classics and quite challenging too. There are so many that I would like to paint. The latest was my interpretation of Degas – as in Dogas Dancing Dog!
Then I wanted to paint something for Darcy’s birthday and May and I discussed options. I thought she would be perfect as the Mona Lisa, the Darcy Lisa or Mona Darcy. Darcy was a regal dog and the almost smile was so her.
