Quiet Elegance

Lulu by Christopher Broadbent.

Christopher Broadbent, English born photographic artist, is known for his mastery of atmospheric, classical still life photography, often reminiscent of traditional still life paintings. His work is characterised by soft, moody lighting that creates a painterly effect, similar to Dutch Golden Age still life paintings. The rich textures and deep shadows, giving his compositions depth and a timeless quality. The meticulous compositions featuring carefully arranged objects like food, glassware, flowers, and antique items. And a focus on quiet elegance, evoking a sense of nostalgia and tranquility.

We are deeply honoured that Christopher agreed to take a photo of Lulu—these images will be treasured forever.

I first met Christopher and Maya Broadbent while working at Ogilvy & Mather in Milan in the early 1990s. At the time, we had hired Christopher to shoot hero images of Olivetti computers. As we spent time together during the shoot, they learned that I was searching for an apartment to rent—and that’s how they became my landlords. After I left Milan in 1993, we never met up again, though Maya reached out a few times over the years. Finally, after more than 30 years, we reconnected in Paris last December.

It felt as if no time had passed. So much had happened in between, yet our conversation flowed effortlessly, as if we had last seen each other only yesterday. During that reunion, it occurred to me to ask Christopher if he would take a portrait of George and Lulu. Over the years, we’ve had many photo sessions with different photographers, but this one, felt special—deeply personal and filled with sentiment. I was thrilled when he agreed.

So in February, we made the trip back to Milan—this time with just Lulu, as travelling for a weekend with one dog was simply easier.

Lulu was the perfect still life model.

Lulu’s still life portrait hangs proudly amongst our other works of art.

Broadbent’s photography often feels like it belongs in a museum, blending old-world aesthetics with modern photographic techniques.

His work is dedicated to capturing mood and atmosphere through romantic still lifes. Meticulously staged, his compositions reflect a masterful attention to detail, both artistically and technically. He expertly harnesses natural light, using long exposures to enhance depth, drama, and dynamic range, creating images that feel both timeless and painterly.

His works have been exhibited around the world. He still works and lives in Milan, Italy.

The subtle Boundaries between Photography and Painting

Christopher Broadbent is photographer whose still life work melts boundaries between photography and painting. Inspired by 17th and 18th century Renaissance paintings of natura morta, Broadbent presents poetic, silent images that investigate moments of intimate and temporal suspension. The flowers, fruits, everyday objects and cooking utensils featured in his pictures, are often transformed into still life compositions that reference a traditional, classic genre of painting, while emphasizing the transient beauty of life.
