And it was AYE!!!

And we too say “Aye!”  Hooray! Hooray!  Harvey’s Army had succeeded in making Harvey’s Law active!!!

The ePetition that received over 120,000 signatures went to Parliament this afternoon and it received a resounding “AYE!” to amending the law that all dead pets found on streets must be scanned, identified, logged and to notify the owners whenever possible!

And all this because of Harvey.Harvey, please tell all your friends at Rainbow Bridge that the humans have really done us proud. They fought for our dignity in death. If not for the immense love of your owners, and the love of all those in Harvey’s Army, we wouldn’t be here today, feeling just a bit better knowing that if something happened to us when we go missing, that the people who love us most will be informed.

Thank you Harvey’s Army – with Derek Twigg, MP of Halton who successfully brought the topic to Parliament for debate and another strong supporter, Jason McCartney, MP of Colne Valley and Rt. Hon John Hayes MP from the Department of Transport … and Mummy! 🙂

Derek Twigg presented the case and as we held our breath, one by one, each Member of Parliament present gave their views.  Many of the MPs recounted their own experiences of pets lost and their own personal agony of not knowing and the immense sense of loss. A few spoke of how pets are very much a part of the family – and they are often in our lives to teach us lessons, etc. And that responsible pet owners who have their pets chipped should not be let down by the government. This is about caring for people, as much as just giving dogs their dignity in death.

When John Hayes, the Transport Minister responded to the debate, we could not believe our ears.  That he will put into action immediately that it is mandatory to scan and log dead pets in all new Highway Agency contracts, and all current contracts will be rectified immediately.  And this is not limited only on Highways but all roads! And in addition, this applies to cats as well.  There is no need for it to become legislation – that it is now declared mandatory.

A victory beyond our belief – there were tears, many tears today and yesteryear. It was bittersweet to know that this only happened because of Harvey, Jester and Shiva … and many others.  As someone said – a victory for compassion.

And what an amazing experience it has been to meet all those members of Harvey’s Army who travelled to London to listen to the debate, all the people at Parliament who took the time to discuss this issue.  Thank you to the thousands who signed the petition to help make it happen. It has been an amazing experience.
