Well, who would have known!!! We did it! See I’m running ahead of some greyhound type! (It’s a Weimaraner! LOL!)
May’s comment: Of course it brought out a lot of nasty comments saying Cockapoos are not a breed but a mongrel. I think we should remind those people the vote is for top dog – and crossbreed, mongrel or mutt – Cockapoos and Labradoodles are still dogs!

I’m a spoodle owner myself (Australian for cockapoo). I find it puzzling to suggest they are mutts. Where do they think all of these other breeds come from if not from selective breeding? All breeds were originally created by crossing to obtain desirable characteristics they are no different. Otherwise they’d still be wolves!
We get very judgmental comments from a lot “pure breed” owners. They call our cockapoos/spoodles “mongrels” – if they thought a little harder and understand all dogs came from wolves and have been cross-bred over centuries – just that what they call the “pure breeds” were cross bred earlier than cockapoos. It makes them sound quite ignorant actually.
Whilst being very happy that both the labradoodle and cockapoo are at the top of the list it is indeed very very important to stress that,
1/ all poodle crosses are crosses,
2/this means that they are not a breed,
3/ this means they do not all come out the same, a litter of say 10 would all maybe come out differently.
4/ some of these crosses shed hair, even though you are told by some breeders they dont!
5/ these dogs are not always good for allergy sufferers.
6/they are lovely family dogs if trained, Properly and socialised
7/they do not like being left all day,

Dear Annettte, the vote was for favourite DOG. It’s not about breed. All dogs derived from wolves – the so called “pure breeds” were purposefully crossed just hundreds and hundreds of years earlier.
And no dogs, not even the “pure breds” like to be left all day – and neither should they be.
I was pleased with the result and the only reason I was pleased was because of the uncalled for nasty comments on that poll. Yes I am aware that makes me sound petty and I am ok with it. I am a dog lover, I had many dogs over the years and all of them were pure breeds. Always from pups, as I am a woman who sadly will never experience carrying children of her own so bringing up pups allowed me to mould them as I would have done my children. However, NEVER did I encountered as much prejudice then I have since getting my cross breed cockapoo, which incidentally is the best dog I have ever had. And that is wrong, I have made an informed decision about my cross breed as I did in the past when I selected my pure breeds. Sadly that is not the norm and most people choose their breeds based on looks and not needs. Finally the Telegraph poll was about dogs, just a few of them and boy I’m I glad the cockapoos/doodles got shortlisted for once….. and WON !!! YAY !!!!!!
This British survey was for top dog, not top pure breed. Cockapoos and labradoodles are mixed breeds that are bred for certain desirable characteristics, such as appearance, size, intelligence and personality. Of course, certain traits may not necessarily be obtained in every poo mix. That’s the mysterious way of genetics! However to call poo mixes as “mongrels” would be demeaning and inaccurate. All dogs were originally derived from wolves and it is man who manipulated the wolves to obtain certain characteristics that were desired, so therefore, all dogs are mixed/mongrels. As an parent of 2 beautiful cockapoos, I stand behind this breed 100%. They are overwhelmingly cute, intelligent, gentle and have such clownlike personalities. I love my cockapoos!

Really pleased with this result. It’s no secret Cockapoo’s are my ‘top dogs’. I believe part of their charm is their uniqueness and individuality with regard coat type/size etc. As well as their ability to learn quickly and be amazing, affectionate family pets A fabulous dog and a very worthy winner.
Not the time for entering into debates on breeds and origins and terms. Time to celebrate our beloved Cockapoo’s 🙂
LOVE my cockerpoo! Best dog I have ever had and I’ve had 3 others before – one mixture and 2 pedigree – he is the most entertaining, characterful and charming little man and above all wants to please! Whole family love him and now my daughter has one too.
5 years ago our cockapoo “Johnny” came in our lives. I am very happy about this breed because I am very allergic to dogs. Before we had twice very very lovely Old English Sheepdogs (NOT on your list??). With the first one I wanted to breed, unfortunately the jury of one dog show found out that our “fifty-Fifty”, daughter of world champions parents, had a malformated teeth which was not allowed for breeding – my young-girl dreams were gone …
Therefore … every dog, the “pure” breed as well as “volitional mix” breeds like the cockapoos as well as mongrels should be loved, respected and should live species-appropriated with its owner!
