Whispers of Versailles, a Night Beneath the Chandeliers, Palace Secrets & Velvet Dreams
There’s something quietly surreal about sleeping within the gates of Versailles. Long after the final tourists have departed and the last echo of footsteps fades along the gilded corridors, the château settles into a hushed, velvety calm — and you realise you are one of the very few permitted to stay behind.
Airelles Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle is the only hotel set within the grounds of the Château de Versailles itself.
It occupies a restored 17th-century building within the palace grounds, once home to court nobility and finance ministers. Today, it’s been reborn with lavish grace: a symphony of silk wallpapers, gleaming parquet floors, and antiques chosen with such care you half expect Marie Antoinette to sweep into the room at any moment.
Lovingly restored to its 18th-century splendour, using authentic fabrics, antique furnishings, and period-inspired details. Interiors reference the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI, complete with original parquet floors, fireplaces, and tapestries.
On arrival, you’re not so much checked in as welcomed to court. A liveried courtier appears at your door come morning to gently wake you with a silver tray of coffee, delicate pastries, and the softest knock — a gesture so delightfully indulgent it feels almost theatrical. Days begin with breakfast overlooking the Orangerie, followed by private tours of the Château and its secret apartments, with no one else around but the sun filtering through lace curtains.
The rooms are utterly romantic, dressed in shades of dusky rose, soft dove grey, or deep, regal blue. Beds are dressed in crisp linens and topped with embroidered cushions. Chandeliers sparkle above marble fireplaces, and windows frame the manicured perfection of the palace gardens. It’s history made intimate—the grandeur of Versailles with the soul of a private home.
The hotel’s restaurant is helmed by legendary chef Alain Ducasse. Dinner is a candlelit affair, a tribute to 18th-century gastronomy, served with courtly flourish. Afterwards, you might stroll the deserted grounds under a silvered sky or simply retreat to your salon with a glass of champagne, half-dreaming of powdered wigs and whispered intrigues.

Perhaps the most incredible luxury is the exclusive, after-hours private tours of Versailles. We explored the Queen’s Chambers, the Hall of Mirrors, the Trianon Palace, and the gardens — without the crowds.
To dance in Versailles is to waltz with history – beneath chandeliers of captured starlight, where silk once whispered secrets to marble floors, and a single turn becomes a century, a memory, forever.
And yes — well-behaved dogs are just as cosseted.
They’re offered treats, beds, and a warm welcome, padding contentedly through salons where royal paws may once have trod.
Just to confirm that dogs are NOT allowed in the Palace grounds nor in the Chateau. But everywhere in the Airelles Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle they are allowed. When we went to the Trianon Palace, our room was not quite ready so the wonderful courtiers took care of Lulu. When we went to visit the Chateau, she stayed in our room. Lulu is very ok with staying in the room by herself.
