Red February

February arrived quietly this year, wrapped in a palette of greys. The days were still short, the skies heavy, and the rain kept coming. Pavements glistened, coats stayed damp, and umbrellas became loyal companions. On the surface, it was a month that could easily have slipped by unnoticed.

And yet, beneath the drizzle, February was a month of love in all its forms. Not just the obvious hearts and roses, but the quieter expressions too, shared meals, familiar routines, small acts of care.

February also marked the arrival of the Chinese New Year, welcoming the Year of the Horse, a symbol of strength, movement, and forward momentum. Against the muted February days, flashes of red and gold felt especially vivid. The Horse carries an energy of courage and progress, a reminder to keep moving forward.

Among all the rain, small signs of change quietly appeared. Snowdrops began to push through the soaked ground, delicate yet determined. Their white petals felt like a promise that spring is already on its way, even if winter hasn’t quite loosened its grip. Seeing them after days of rain brought a sense of hope, a reminder that brighter days often arrive gently and without fuss.

Every February, we celebrate Darcy’s birthday. She would have been fifteen. Her absence is still felt in quiet moments. Marking her birthday wasn’t just about loss; it was about honouring a life that continues to shape ours in both big and small ways.

Adding to that feeling of connection, we reunited with old friends at a Doodle meet-up in Hyde Park, held close to Darcy’s birthdate. Dogs and humans gathered despite the winter chill, laughter rising above the low clouds – and the sun came out. Familiar faces coming together, friendships resuming effortlessly, and memories layered with new moments.

There was something fitting about all of this unfolding in February. While nature waits to spring into action, life quietly reorganises itself — intentions are set, hearts remember, and hope begins to take root.

So although the weather stayed grey and uncooperative, February was anything but dull. It was a month of love and remembrance, reunions and renewal. Proof that even the wettest, quietest months can hold beauty and that spring, like hope, always finds a way to bloom.
