Happy Cinco de Mayo

IMG_5745

We were going to re-visit our favourite Mexican restaurant in London on this day when the heavens opened and the skies roared with thunder. But we will go back to Mezcalito in Chelsea another day and maybe when we are allowed to sit inside!

But we did learn a bit more about Cinco de Mayo and it was not all about wearing Mexican hats and eat burritos!

First of all it is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo (5th May) remembers the Battle of Puebla, which took place in 1862, when Napoleon III sent his troops to invade the country, citing that Mexico was in debt to France. The Mexican 2000 strong army was nothing in comparison to France’s 6000. However, the Mexican soldiers were joined by about 2700 armed civilians and together they defeated the French under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

All that said, to all our amigos, may your Cinco de Mayo be full of goodness as an overstuffed burrito!

Who do you think wears the sombrero better?

May’s comment: One of the fun things about writing blogs is the research and learning.

Mezcalito Chelsea at 119 Sydney St, London SW3 6NR. They have terrace seating but interestingly dogs and children are not allowed on the terrace but inside! That’s a first! But the food is good and we will be back.
