We are staying at Rusacks St Andrews, a Victorian hotel overlooking the 18th green of the Old Course, steps to the beach, or mere minutes to the historic old town of St Andrews.
A Storied History in the Home of Golf
Rusacks has stood at the edge of the links since the late 19th century, opening in 1887 when St Andrews was already drawing travellers in search of sea air, sport, and stillness. First known as the Marine Hotel, it has always occupied a front-row seat to the life of the town — watching the rituals of golf unfold daily, observing generations of visitors return, and quietly adapting as the world beyond its doors changed. Its character has endured not through reinvention but through careful evolution: respecting what came before while keeping the hotel relevant and welcoming.
And on the 18th fairway stands the famous Swilcan Bridge, a low stone arch, renowned for its history (over 700 years old) as a shepherd’s crossing and its significance as a pilgrimage spot for golfers.

From our room, the view stretches directly across the Old Course. Yet it’s the view beyond the greens that feels most significant for us: the long curve of West Sands Beach and the North Sea beyond it.
From this vantage point, perched between links and shoreline, the horizon feels especially present. It draws the eye outward, inviting reflection. In winter, the colours are subdued but deeply atmospheric — sea and sky softening into slate and blue at dusk, then catching hints of gold as the light returns. These are the moments that pull you down onto the sand, into the wind, and into the quiet clarity that only the coast seems to offer.
Dog Friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome in the hotel rooms. However, dining is limited to the One Under Bar. Or at The Gallery, a quiet area where all guests who choose to dine with their dogs can be accommodated there.
