Today is Pancake Day! Please be careful when you toss your pancakes!
We’re going out for pancakes later – after a long walk so I can have some (been on a diet!)!
May’s comment: I didn’t know this before but Pancake Day, otherwise known as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday, is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.
It is observed by many Christian denominations. Traditionally, it’s a day of self-examination and repentance during the season of Lent. Shrove Tuesday comes from the word shrive, meaning to “confess”.
Shrove Tuesday provides one last opportunity to splurge and eat whatever you want!
I didn’t know this either but Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French. It refers to the practice of eating richer, fattier foods before the ritual fasting of Lent. In the UK, we don’t do Mardi Gras but instead we eat pancakes! Pancakes, devolved from using eggs, butter, milk and sugar in the batter – are ingredients forbidden during the fast.

I think the tradition if eating pancakes is because people needed to use up perishable food before their lent fast so milk etc got used in pancakes. That’s what I was told! Xx
