We will always remember you, Bert, each time we read your book and remember you fondly.

Even though we haven’t met, we had read about your adventures! You reminded us of George. And Mum told us that you had the most wonderful hoomans who gave you a second chance.
You were found wandering near the North Circular (a busy intersection in north London), and taken to the Mayhew rescue centre in North London. They adopted you there.

You were a mystery. You were terrified of other dogs, confined spaces, loud noises and water.
They estimated you must have been 10+ years and you had no teeth. On close examination you were full of arthritis. Regardless in knowing that they might not have you for long, your hoomans gave you a home, a lot of medical care and an abundance of love.
It warms our heart that there are really good hoomans out there, Bert. And you got to experience all that in the last three years of your life. And now your book has touched many.

Bert, run free where there is no more pain – and you will never be smelly again!
Our friends who are already there will meet you and together you will run, chase squirrels, skip through fields of flowers – and there is nothing there that will frighten you. And there’s even our favourite vet, Mr. Butt.

May’s comment: Bert’s owner, Suzanne sent us “Bert Smells” a book loosely based on Bert’s adventures. We started following Bert on Instagram – and soon learnt how his condition had been deteriorating in the past year during to severe arthritis – till he could no longer walk as his back legs were giving way. And on Friday, they knew it was time to let Bert be released from his heavily affected arthritic limbs.
Nothing prepares us for the empty hole in our hearts. But may the memories and the love fill that void to make it hurt less.
Through all this, let us remember the many Berts out there, who deserve a second chance in life.

May Suzanne be comforted for loving Bert and giving him the best home he could have ever had. Also, thanks to her, Bert was given the best medical attention ever! Now Bert is with old and new friends who will love him and play with him until we are all united with our dogs!
