Ugly Butterfly 2.0 was the destination for this year’s birthday celebrations, and it couldn’t have felt more right.
There’s something rather fitting about marking another year in a place that represents reinvention. Not just because of the food, although that alone would be reason enough, but because of what “2.0” stands for: a continuation, an evolution, a new chapter.
Having experienced the original Ugly Butterfly at Carbis Bay, St Ives, there was a sense of anticipation in revisiting something familiar.
Now located within The Headland Hotel, Ugly Butterfly 2.0 has found a setting that suits it perfectly.

We chose to stay at The Headland for the trip, which made the experience feel seamless, as everything we needed was in one place. The hotel itself sits high above the Atlantic, with sweeping views and that immediate feeling of escape the moment you arrive. And a short walk down to Fistral Beach.
The original Ugly Butterfly, created by Adam Handling, built its reputation on more than just exceptional cooking. It championed sustainability, thoughtful use of ingredients, and the idea that beauty can be found where you might not expect it.
Ugly Butterfly 2.0 carries that same philosophy forward, but with a renewed sense of place here in Newquay. It feels evolved, but still true to its roots.

Dinner at Ugly Butterfly 2.0 was everything I’d hoped for, each dish thoughtful, beautifully presented, and deeply connected to Cornwall. There’s a quiet confidence in the food, a sense that every element has purpose.

And of course, it didn’t stop there.
Afternoon tea was essential. It brought the same creativity and attention to detail, elevating something traditional into something memorable and just a little bit indulgent, exactly as it should be for a birthday.

Ugly Butterfly 2.0 isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a reminder that life evolves, that returning can be just as meaningful as discovering something new, and that sometimes, the best celebrations are the ones that simply feel like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
