Celebrating Another Year: A Heart Full of Gratitude
Birthdays mean something different to me now.
Since turning 60, they’ve become less about marking age and more about honouring life itself. Each year feels like a quiet, powerful reminder: I am still here. I am healthy. And that, in itself, is everything.
There was a time when birthdays might have been about lavish dinner parties or presents. Now, they’re about presence.
I like to get away from the day-to-day routine. Somewhere that allows me to breathe, reflect, and simply be. And I’m never alone on these trips. My dogs have always been part of this ritual, first Darcy, then George, and now Lulu. Each of them has marked a chapter of my life, walking beside me not just on beaches and countryside paths, but through the years themselves.
Sometimes, friends join me. Not a crowd, just the right people, at the right time. And somehow, Sylvia is always there. The kind of friend who doesn’t need an invitation to show up, she just does.

This year, we found ourselves in Cornwall, at The Headland Hotel and Spa.

Looking out over Fistral Beach, the views are vast and uninterrupted. That was exactly what I needed.
The ocean stretches endlessly, shifting colours with the light, sometimes calm, sometimes wild. There’s something about being by the sea that puts everything into perspective. It softens the noise of everyday life and replaces it with something quieter, steadier.

We didn’t rush. There was no itinerary. Just walks on the beach, the dogs exploring every scent as if it were a story waiting to be told. I walked, watched, and breathed it all in. These are the moments that feel like true celebration now. Just quiet joy.
As I sat there, looking out at the sea, I realised something simple – this is what celebration looks like for me now. Not ticking off another year, but appreciating the one just lived. Not fearing what’s ahead, but feeling grateful for what is.

We had lunch at the Fish House on Fistral Beach, and we saw this poster hanging on the wall. It says – LIVE every moment, LAUGH every day, LOVE beyond words.

That, I thought, is a good guide for the days, months and years ahead.
