The ways of Manhattan

After L.A. Impostor went to NYC. There she learnt a few things about living in Manhattan which I had experienced the last time I was there. “Please curb your dog” is what I saw everywhere I went – and this sign is now more specific – “curb means OFF the sidewalk.”
Impostor and Mummy had really just a day and a half in NYC before they come home to us. She just wanted to catch up with some friends and run some errands. Manhattan is full of amazing things to see and do, no wonder people want to live there, mummy’s friend went online to www.manhattanmiami.com to find her place

They started the day at Soho House – having breakfast and writing my blog
While Impostor sat patiently. Unlike me, she doesn’t beg for food. And I probably wouldn’t have been allowed in there either! So it’s a good thing Impostor is flat-pack dog!Mummy’s friend, Irina came to join us and they had a good natter about life and everything else – it’s always good to catch up with friends.
At midday it was time to move on. On the way uptown Mummy wanted to show Impostor the place where she had her very first real job – at Young & Rubicam. But alas, the beautiful old lobby at 285 Madison that she remembered so fondly no longer exists!!!!It has been redeveloped – completely revamped!!! I guess there’s no such thing as a listed building in midtown Manhattan!

Back to the old neighbourhood, which I know well, there were things that needed to be done …Mummy went to close her bank account once and for all! It’s really a goodbye New York moment. I wasn’t with her but at least Impostor was.

Walking around the Carnegie Hill neighbourhood, you see dogs everywhere!Mummy kept looking at each and everyone of them, and I know she was thinking about us. She was thinking what George would do when he sees all those dogs. I know I would probably ignore them now that I know New York dogs tend to not greet each other when they are on the sidewalks. But then again there are many big dogs and I will probably bark at them and George will follow suit – and Mummy will be so embarrassed by his behaviour!!!

Aha, then she saw this little one and she finally went up to say hello. Schuyler, a 10 week old labradoodle!Apparently Schuyler doesn’t like going out. She prefers to sleep all day. Must be growing spurts!

And then crossing the street, they met Indie, a golden doodle. She was afraid of Impostor. Indie is 3 years old and she’s smaller than me/Impostor!!! Isn’t she sweet?

I think it was an afternoon that Mummy just wanted to re-visit places – like old times, especially after learning that her first office no longer exists, and having closed her bank account. 🙁

The hamburger joint, Jackson Hole has also been replaced by Eli’s Essential and so on and so on. I think she realised that things move on and we cannot hold onto the past.

That said, one of Mummy’s favourite places in the neighbourhood – The Corner Bookstore is still very much there. She used to spend a lot of Sunday afternoons in there, browsing through all those lovely booksAs she was browsing this time, she found this book – Dog StoriesShe finally bought something for herself. She has a bag full of things for us! 🙂

And another neighbourhood favourite …Table d’hôte sweet little neighbourhood restaurant.That’s the other thing, dogs are allowed outside of restaurants only!

May’s comment: There’s a place that was once home, and now when I return to visit, it is still a base for me. I love to re-trace steps but every time I return, the old establishments are slowly eroded away by new ones. But Carnegie Hill still remains a little village, alive with children because of all the schools in the vicinity …And oh so many dogs! Walking home after dinner – I’m beginning to realise 9-9.30 pm seems to be the hours of last walks. So many types of dogs, all sizes parading the avenues and side streets.

I loved living in Carnegie Hill – a very special place I called home for more than 10 years.
