On Tuesday, 4th August, life in Beirut changed forever …
We have seen videos of the devastating blast. We have seen the devastation. We wondered about the animals. How frightened they must have been? Were they at home? Were they stuck in the rubble? We wondered.
Then Kim alerted us to Animals Lebanon who have been out there seeking out those pets of people who have been affected, reuniting them and saving them scared and hurt from the rubble.
Their impact so far …
- 2 hours after the explosion, Animal Lebanon was out there.
- 350+ requests for help
- 289 volunteers for the search, rescue and care
- 73 animals were given veterinary care
- 52 animals taken to shelter
- 27 rescued animals needing adoption
- 104 lost animals reunited
- 2,180 kg of food distributed for affected animals
- 5000+ hours spent on the ground in the affected area
We may be far away but we can be a hero for one of those animals by helping Animals Lebanon. Support their rescue work by donating to https://www.animalslebanon.org/donate
Back in the UK, we are aware that Wild at Heart had started it’s programme in Lebanon back in 2018. Their mission is to sterilise stray dogs to control the problem.

Following the recent tragedy, emergency donations have been made to each of the four shelters on the ground and WAHF are starting to support Give Me A Paw with a sterilisation programme for stray dogs starting this weekend. Now that there is a concentrated population of strays in the Karantina region, close to the site of the explosion, the GMAP team are hopeful they’ll be able to sterilise as many dogs as possible.

If you would like to sponsor the cost of sterilisation, your donation will go directly to saving a Lebanese dog from an endless cycle of breeding.
May’s comment: With so much going on these days, just stopping to think about those in need. Giving a shout out to the dogs in Beirut this week and the just two of the charities that are stepping in to help animals in this difficult time.
Animals Lebanon improves the welfare of animals through comprehensive national animal protection and welfare legislation. To support this campaign we provide nationwide public assistance for companion animals while rescuing and improving the conditions of captive endangered wildlife.
Wild at Heart Foundation fund and support global dog rescue and projects all over the world to help further our mission to reduce the world’s 600 million stray dog population.
