Up, Up and Away!

One day last week, we took a drive out of London to the picturesque Surrey Hills to have lunch at Beaverbrook House with Anne and Skylar. But it wasn’t just any lunch. It was the Great British Balloon lunch!

Does this mean we will be dining in the sky, Skylar?

May’s comment: Not quite, George. They are stationary hot air balloons in the Italian Garden at the House.

Each balloon will seat up to four and offers the rare chance to savour an authentic Japanese Ishiyaki dining experience in the extraordinary settings of a classic hot air balloon basket.  

This year, they sport a Great British makeover – the six hot air balloons are Union Jack themed!

There’s a map of the menu which allows you to visualise your voyage through the landscapes of the coast, land, sea and mountains, taking you on a journey through exquisite Japanese dishes that use local produce.

The menu is an Ishiyaki “hot stone” culinary journey – featuring an elegant menu of delicately flavoured selections of sushi, sashimi, and nigiri plus the finest cuts of meat and fish from the hotel’s Josper grill.

For dessert, we chose to move over to the terrace for a change of scenery, plus it was threatening to rain. We were treated to an impressive view of the grounds.

It was altogether such a lovely day out and away from the city. Discovering a new place and the experience was rejuvenating.

At BeaverBrook House, dogs are not allowed in the House but everywhere else.

In summary:

• Each balloon can accommodate four guests – including dogs. No children under 12, and the dress code is smart casual.
• A Japanese inspired culinary experience from sea to land.
• Dogs are not allowed in the main house – so if we should decide to stay we will be at the Garden House or Coach House, and we can dine on the terraces.
• Dogs are allowed everywhere else on the grounds.
