Your mummy told us last night that it was time – you had to leave us.
Rest in peace, Myrtle – we remember you with great fondness.
We did not have much time together but we will remember …
Our last run in your garden.
I’m sorry I stole your bottle
And you went to hide the others just in case Georgie and I got hold of another one.
We had shared our last evening together sitting by the fire (on the sofa – we broke all the house rules but who cares!)
We were all up to no good!
I jumped over that very short barrier, Georgie didn’t know how to do so and you stayed where you were told.
You took us to the train station before we said goodbye. That was in January …
… and we didn’t know if we would see you again. We did hope we would.
But we know you are in a better place now that you have crossed over to Rainbow Bridge.
Where you will run free again …
And there must be lots and lots of bottles for you to hunt down there – burying them in the clouds, amongst fields of daffodils and chasing butterflies.
In the meantime, whatever you have buried in your garden – I am sure someday, your mummy will find them – one by one. And every time she does, it will be you reminding her – she once had a very, very good friend. And may they bring smiles to her face when she thinks of you – doing the great bottle hunt at Rainbow Bridge.
We will see you there some day.
For Myrtle’s mummy, Niki, this is what Myrtle would have wanted you to know …
“If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this … the last battle … can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test,
We had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so,
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close..we two..these years
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.”
May’s comment: Sending you our love, wish we could have been there for you and with you to say goodbye to Myrtle.
