A little gem in Covent Garden

IMG_4984

Nothing like beautiful photos of cakes to tempt Mummy to rush out the door on a Sunday afternoon –all the way to Covent Garden to Abuelo Coffee House & Kitchen. It was already 2pm when we got there but the restaurant was still full and we had to wait. But what a pleasant wait with this beautiful painting as the background. As we waited, we asked the owners a lot of questions, like – what does Abuelo mean?

It means “grandfather” in Spanish.

Why Spanish?

Abuelo is a modern Antipodean-meets-South American menu, designed to reflect our Australian x Argentinian background and features fresh, organic, uncomplicated food for all day dining.

And where’s that dog that appeared in your Instagram photos?

That’s Annie, a goldendoodle, but she’s gone for a walkabout.

Well, I better go outside to wait for her then. Finally Annie came back from her walkabout. And then it was finally time for us to be seated. The best seat in the house.  We loved the landscape paintings on the wall by an Australian artist.

“Green velvet” matcha latte to start …Before the food arrived – and such pretty food – Mummy had a BBQ Croque-Monsieur : marinated organic pulled pork, caramelised balsamic onions finished with a micro-green garnish.  And Camilla had smoked Paprika Arepa with organic slow cooked pulled beef, mustard mayo, semi-pickled red cabbage and rawslaw.

Mummy said we’ll have to come back because most of their cakes were gone by the time we got there – and that was what drew Mummy to try the restaurant in the first place. Hmmm. The power of Instagram. We’ve shared our photos too on our Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/missdarcyandme/

May’s comment: Camilla had come to visit and she was showing me Instagram pics of Abuelo Coffee & Kitchen in Covent Garden. She thought I would like their decor – but I thought their pictures of food were even better.  I must have been hungry as we jumped into a cab and raced over for lunch! 🙂 They looked that good.

And the place, though small was beautifully decorated –With large pieces of Australian landscape paintings and heavily feature unique timber joinery pieces constructed from Australian NSW Spotted Gum.

The food was fabulous and different – a cross of fresh produce and Argentinian cooking. And they love dogs.Annie, their in-resident goldendoodle – She was so excited to see another doodle, she couldn’t sit still. And everyone seems to know Annie!  Gorgeous girl who might be joining our Hyde Park Doodle Meets!

Located in Covent Garden, Abuelo is an Australian-meets-South-American coffee house and kitchen serving light, fresh, produce-led meals. 26 Southampton St, London WC2E 7RS

We’ve added it to our Wine & Dine list but not sure in which category to add it to – so for now it has been classified under – Asian/Pan-Asian/Antipodean or Fusion!!!! Nothing like being cross-cultural.
