Another reason to love George …

Clooney, that is.

Someone had told us that George Clooney has a rescue, just like our own little George. When Mummy did a little research, she was more than pleased to find yet another reason that our own George has been aptly named.

So the story goes that when Cathy Stanley, founder of L.A.-area rescue Camp Cocker, was on one of her many visits to high-kill shelters to save cocker spaniels, she had she found not two but five cocker spaniels she needed to save.  They only had the budget to save two but she couldn’t leave any of them behind.

Among them was a an overweight black spaniel due to an under active thyroid and had a dry eye. He was in a filthy, crowded dog overrun with other dogs and constantly being lunged at by another. He was so afraid that he would leap backwards trying to get away, and his rolls of fat were shaking.  This little dog was Einstein.

Due to Einstein’s need for care, he was quickly taken out of a boarding facility and into a Camp Cocker volunteer’s foster home. Over time, his condition improved. Einstein was put on the adoption page and was described  as “quite affectionate” and “a real teddy bear of a dog!” – apt description for our own George!

Apparently, that’s where Mr. Clooney learnt about Einstein and proceeded to ask to adopt him. But just because he was George Clooney doesn’t mean he gets to pick any dog he wants. He was told that the Einstein would have to like him first.

So to make sure that Einstein would take to him – it was said that Clooney rubbed meatballs on his shoes – and how could Einstein resist. Cheeky bugger!

“Forever, now, he just thinks of me as the guy with the meatball feet,” Clooney told Esquire. “He loves me. I can do no wrong. He follows me everywhere.” – yes, that’s what we do best!

But the story of rescuing a dog did not end there.

According to this video about Einstein, “the unnamed adopter” made a “generous adoption donation” which the rescue used to pay for their vet debts.

Thank you Mr. Clooney, we love our George and we think you’re still one of the best! And we hope Amal will love him just as much.

May’s comment: I have come to realise that rescue isn’t just about one dog.  I know that in our case when I adopted George, I not only released space for another dog but the adoption fee went towards servicing another dog that can be saved. And the story goes on and on.

And at the same time, each rescue becomes an ad for the rescue homes. I know that George had raised awareness for Hungary Hearts Dog Rescue and friends in America have donated towards their efforts.

I love, love, love puppies but sometimes it’s better to save a life that already exists.
