The Chalk Freehouse, Chelsea — A Refined Gastropub Reborn
Tucked just off King’s Road on Tryon Street, The Chalk Freehouse has quickly become a welcome addition to Chelsea’s dining scene. Formerly The Butcher’s Tap & Grill, the pub was relaunched earlier this year under the guidance of Chef Tom De Keyser (formerly of The Hand & Flowers in Marlow) and the Tom Kerridge Group. The result? A gastropub experience that feels both elevated and inviting.

The Victorian façade, now painted a crisp white, hints at the refreshed identity within. Best of all, it remains dog-friendly — perfect for Chelsea locals or those shopping nearby who want a meal with their four-legged companions in tow.
Style & Atmosphere
Inside, The Chalk strikes a lovely balance between pub comfort and contemporary polish. Soft lighting, vibrant artwork, and leather banquettes create a smart yet relaxed space. We were seated in the raised dining area, a calmer spot slightly removed from the buzz of the bar — ideal when dining with dogs.

Food & Drink
We were invited to experience The Chalk for ourselves, as fans of Tom Kerridge’s restaurants, and it did not disappoint.
To start, I chose The Hand & Flowers Chicken & Duck Liver Parfait, churned to order, served with poultry jelly, apricot chutney, and toasted brioche. It was nothing short of divine. Ju-li opted for the Cornish Crab & Crushed Norfolk Peer Potato Salad, which was as refreshing as it was beautifully presented.

For mains, we were spoiled for choice. The Pork Chop Schnitzel with Smoked Bacon, Pickled Cabbage, and Fried Duck Egg was tempting, as was the Confit Duck Leg with Braised Lentils, Radicchio, and Fresh Figs. But our waitress waxed lyrical about the Baby Chicken Roasted in Curried Butter with Braised Beans and Preserved Lemon, so I followed her recommendation — and she was absolutely right. While Ju-li went for the 30-Day Dry-Aged Bavette of Beef with Tomato & Herb Butter and Watercress, which was equally superb.

Despite being comfortably full, dessert was irresistible. The Chelsea Bun with Cold Vanilla Custard, Boozy Fruits, and Praline — a clever twist on the traditional — was calling my name, and it was worth every bite. Ju-li chose the Brown Sugar Meringue with English Strawberries and Cabernet Sauvignon Vinegar, which was light, tangy, and perfectly balanced.

Final Thoughts
The Chalk Freehouse is exactly what Chelsea needed: a stylish yet approachable gastropub where elevated food meets a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual bite, a refined dinner, or simply a glass of wine with your dog at your feet, it’s a spot worth returning to.
If you happen to be at Chelsea Dog Day on October 4th, make sure to stop in after all the activities are over.
