Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter

“Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together”

In the spirit of the new Olympic Games motto, together, George and I took on the ‘Take the Lead’ challenge to walk a marathon mile during the month of August. To begin with, it was never the plan for George to be involved due to recent incidences with his back legs. But amazingly, after the first 6.69 miles – he seemed fine (while Mum was completely knackered!) From then on, he continued walking with us.

I was taking the lead!

The challenge was to raise awareness and funds for St. Mungo’s, a homeless charity that allow dogs in the hostels for the homeless because they recognise that a dog can often feel like the only companion for those who have nothing else.

After the initial flurry of walking the marathon distance in the first five days of August when we had clocked up 27.36 miles, we hadn’t done more because Mum got terribly with work. W would never have completed it.

But before August was over and with time on her hands, Mum decided that maybe we should try and match the Olympic men’s race walking event of 50 km (approximately 31 miles). So last week, in one final push, we added 4.59 miles taking us to a total of 31.95 miles!

That meant we just managed to squeeze past the distance of race walking! Woohoo!

And we did it together. Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter – Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together

May’s comment: IOC President Thomas Bach added the word “together” to the Olympic motto before the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – in recognition of the difficult times that we have been going through – and that the spirit of this Olympics was to bring the world together again.

We are part of Team Cockapoo along with our friends Julie with Barnaby and Belinda with Freddie – doing this together to raise awareness and funds for St. Mungo’s.

For over 50 years, St Mungo’s has been at the forefront of efforts to tackle homelessness and rebuild lives. St Mungo’s recognise that a dog can often feel like the only companion for someone sleeping on the streets. They provide solace and comfort during what can be an extremely difficult time. St. Mungo’s recognises the powerful emotional support a dog can provide and that’s why they allow dogs in their hostels.

‘Take The Lead’ is a challenge for hoomans teaming up with their dogs in a pledge to walk the marathon distance (26.2 miles) in a month, contributing to a group target of 11,453 – one for every person St Mungo’s helped last year.
