Whichever way I turn, it seems like Eros is aiming his bow and arrow at me!
But then he’s been aiming his arrow for over a hundred years – and still yet to shoot it!
Everyone thinks of the statue Eros at Piccadilly Circus but seem to forget about the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain on which it is perched.
That’s because everyone sits on it and no one can see it.
May’s comment: The fountain was erected to commemorate the philanthropic works of Lord Shaftesbury, a politician and philanthropist. The road leading off of Piccadilly is also named after him.
The winged nude statue perched at the top of the fountain, generally known as Eros, “The God of Selfless Love” – is supposed to represent the philanthropic works of Lord Shaftesbury.
