Chelsea kicked off its celebration of the Platinum Jubilee with seven eggs to mark the seven decades of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. We found five of them pretty quickly. Actually we stumbled upon them! There were two that were quite elusive – but we were not going to give up!
‘Queen of Happiness’ marks the first decade during which she reigned.
Emily Powell created this egg which represents the 1950s, a decade which began with austerity following World War I and ended with affluence. The egg was inspired by the Queen as a strong, courageous female role model. Found on Pavilion Road, after much difficulty.
‘Flower Power’ – of course it was the 60’s!
Rebecca Campbell’s ‘Flower Power’ is a salute to the 1960s. Taking inspiration from Mary Quant, celebrating love and peace. At the Duke of York Square.
God Save the Queen! We found this one on Sloane Square when we were doing our Saturday jaunt around Kings Road.
“70” is designed by Simon Emery his egg represents the 1970’s – a time of the Silver Jubilee and Union Jacks were everywhere!
We love a pink egg and lots of pretty butterflies. Found on Duke of York Square.
“Cocktail Hour” designed by Patricia Mitchell represents the 1980s. It has aluminium butterflies – they represent some of the best British pop music to emerge in that decade. Each butterfly is hand-sprayed with the pastel colours of the 1980s.
‘Garden of Joy’ was on Sloane Square next to the “God Save the Queen”
Ozlem Thompson’s ‘Garden of Joy’ represents the 1990s was inspired by a striking glittery dress that the Queen wore for the Royal Performance in 1999. Combined with the Tudor Rose, it explores the personal choice of colours of Her Majesty and the Royal Parks. Found on Sloane Square.
Kisses for the Queen! That’s my title for the ‘Turquoise Egg’
We found the Turquoise Egg by Tatiana Alida on Pavilion Road. This egg represents Queen Elizabeth’s reign in the 2010s. Her spirit and resolve like the sea that surrounds the islands of Great Britain, are a constant present presence.
And this is, of course my most favourite egg of all! We came across it after Mum went to have her hair done at Richard Ward Salon on Duke of York Square.
‘The Queen and her Kings’ by Sasha Compton represents the 2020s – celebrating the Queen and her future Kings. Inspired by Faberge eggs and a reference to our future heirs to come. Whichever way you look at it – George was in the past and in the future!
May’s comment: Stumbled these eggs one Saturday before we left for our holidays. We only found five before we left and came back to find the last two!
This Eggs On An Era exhibition is a collaboration between @elephantfamily x @clarence_court – they will be on display until 12 June.
