If people understood …

IMG_3119

Mummy is feeling sad these days because she thinks she might have “over-loved” us, or that maybe we have become too much a part of her world.  She has to constantly defend us for being who we are.IMG_3346And we feel it because she is not her happy, go-getter self. She holds us in bed at night and tells us all her concerns. She wondered if she should be more objective about us.

We’re sorry Mummy, if we have caused you trouble. We depend on your love and we’re grateful that you like sharing your life with us, not only because you have separation anxiety and therefore benefit from it, but we know you quite enjoy our company. 🙂

We hope we bring you comfort in these troubling times and that we will do you proud by behaving as best as we are capable of.

We should accept that it’s a no win situation – no matter how often you groom us, we will always be “dirty” animals to some. And we will always be “just a dog” to others to those who do not see dogs as part of the family.

So Mummy, stop hoping they will change or try changing them.  But also let’s not look at the half empty glass. Remember that there are plenty of people who love us in this big, big world.  And we were reminded by two friends whom we haven’t seen in a while …IMG_3454Malgosia with “scary” Rose – a white German Shepherd!  IMG_3473I was admittedly scared – I barked at her but soon realised she’s a friend – as I posed nervously with her IMG_3461And after meeting Malgosia, we arrived home to find another friend waiting for us –IMG_3485Sian is Pippa’s mummy and they used to live around the corner form us. But they have moved back to Chicago.  I used to go for walks and have playdates with Pippa.  Sian was visiting London and asked to see us as she has also never met George.IMG_3478The charmer George flirted – winning Sian over. LOL!  But there was no doubt Sian would love him regardless because she’s a dog-loving human.IMG_3481Sian said George reminded her of her new rescue dog, Harvey.

May’s comment:  Have I become too dog-centric? Does my world revolve around my dog too much?

On the other hand I have a tendency to become over involved with everything I do, whether it be a house project, organising an event, writing a blog.  Being all-consuming is my nature.  And then how can you not love with all your heart when dogs give you so much. They would never purposefully hurt you, beat you down, judge you, disrespect you or punish you. On the other hand, humans do.

I don’t have children and the little one I love most is not mine.  So my dogs are my responsibilities and they give me a purpose. And they give me companionship and unconditional love – hard to come by these days. It’s so easy for people to say dogs should not determine your life. Those people obviously do not have that bond – for many reasons.

I read this on a Facebook posting – which summarises it pretty much for me.

“A dog will never be disloyal, judge you, look at you with hate in their eyes, walk away and leave you, stop loving you or hurt you. They will love you unconditionally, never expect you to change, love you for just being you, be there when you need some comfort, love you until they take their last breath and make you feel like the best person in the world for loving them. If only the human race was like this, the world would be perfect.”

  1. Don’t be sad May! Dogs are just the best. I’d rather stay home with Crumps than go somewhere they don’t like him!

  2. Our pets are God’s gift to us. They give us love and we adore them in return. People who have compassion for animals will have compassion for their fellow man. Be happy, May. It just shows your a loving person. Wish more people could be like you.

  3. Dear May, there is no such thing as too much love. There is not enough love in the world at the moment. The people who criticise you for loving your dogs should be pitied really because they’re the ones who are missing out on a beautiful bond you have with these gorgeous little living creatures. Keep up the good work with your blog, I for one love to read about your adventures with Darcy and George. ❤️??

  4. People who don’t have dogs or cats or some other non-human creature in their lives are lacking something in their souls. Do not let people like this cause worry to you or your life. They are the ones suffering. Like the old saying “misery loves company”…wave them off. I’ve had dogs and cats in my life since I was a little girl. I can’t imagine not having a “fur-buddy” to share my life with. I have my kitty boys right now as I don’t have a way to take a dog with me and I don’t want to leave them alone (even with the cats!!) It distresses me to think you would worry about loving your fur-babies. Whoever has set this worry off, dismiss them immediately. Your blog is WONDERFUL. I love to read it as though Darcy or George were writing it. I had a German Shepherd many years ago who thought he was human. The most wonderful person I’ve ever known. I miss him to this day. He was the best human being I’ve ever known, and he was a dog. Children are not the be-all, end-all. You are blessed with two wonderful four-legged buddies who love you.

  5. Dear May. Please don’t change the way you love or think about Darcy and George. I haven’t met them but I love them and look out for your updates every day. I very much admire how your dogs are your world and go everywhere with you. Doggie people totally get it… I have two wonderful dogs who are my family… They love me more than any human could and expect so little in return. It is totally unconditional and if people do not feel the same as you do about dogs it is their loss. xxx

  6. Karma is my world – she’s led me to help other dogs down on there luck and goes with me everywhere. As I type this she’s lying in bed, snoring gently under the covers. I wouldn’t have it any other way and won’t give two hoots what anyone may say. Love to you and your furry family – Sara & Karma xxx

  7. Dearest May, whatever sadness is touching your soul at the moment, never ever feel you can over love these two beautiful little creatures. I sometimes feel that I love Maggiedog more than any human, but I don’t think that is a bad thing. We as animal lovers “get it” We get the worry, we get the seperation anxiety, we get the absolute joy of seeing their beautiful faces and waggy tails when we come home. We get it. Life is so much more rewarding when you can share it with your little furries. It can be demanding, inconvenient and sometimes downright stressful, but would we have it any other way? Walk on May, with your precious little bundles close by your side, they will always lift your heart ?❤️

  8. Hi May We all have mixed emotions at times depending on what’s happening in our lives. Always be you! I look forward to reading your adventures with Darcy & George and you have inspired me to go places with Bailey I may not have had the confidence to do. I gather what ever you do you put 100% what a lovely caring person you are. If everyone was like you the world would be a much better place love Julie & Bailey xx

  9. Don’t know who or why anyone would intimate you are too involved with Miss Darcy and Georgie. Your blog has been an inspiration of life outside the home that is completely inclusive of people and pets. And your ability to share with us leaves me constantly in awe of you three. When I am sad I know the antics of Miss Darcy and gorgeous Georgie will cheer me up. Please don’t ever stop!

  10. May, you are an inspiration to so many! By sharing your adventures with Darcy and George with us out here in blog land, you’ve encouraged us to do more with our pups, take them more places and just love them more! You’ve also shown us parts of London, and England that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
Darcy and George are a large part of your world and that is absolutely wonderful! Keep loving them with all your heart and soul!
Please keep sharing your adventures, I look forward to reading about them.

  11. HI May. Havent seen you in ages but often see your posts on facebook. Hope you dont let what other people think get you down. the only thing we can effect is how we are to others…. there will always be those “out there” who chose to see things with different eyes.
But i was moved to comment on this post of yours.
You so eloquently describe the lack or malice , the unconditional love (though of course even using that word to describe a dogs emotions is to anthropomorphize) htat animals bring. And that must be positive …though I am moved to suggest a cuddly toy would do just the same.
But more than this I cant help wonder if the “messiness” and indeed the other emotions that animals cant bring to us are what we all (well a lot of us) aspire to.
When we met those years ago at Hoffman and you where going through so much I hoped that you would find what you where looking for. And I guess I thought you would find a new relationship to make you happy (well not to make you happy because only we can do that for ourselves) but you know what I mean.
    You did it seems.
The relationship you have with your dogs is a wonderful thing but (and you have already given the reasons why) it doesnt compare to a relationship that we can have with another person. So maybe I am missing the point because perhaps your post was simply about peoples narrow mindedness in relation to the bond you have with your dogs but to me I would want so much more for you because I know you have so much to give.
People can be hurtful, difficult, vindictive , awkward and of course so much more…But I guess thats what makes us human ;-)x
    Much love and kindness
    Vince

    1. Hi Vince, you made me cry … because you read what was written in between the lines, as you always did.
I know that Darcy and George are fillers – they’re a lot easier than “beings” (just watched The BFG) – and maybe this is an escape. But if not for them, I wouldn’t understand pure love – what unconditional loving and giving is all about, and most of all reminding us of the simple joys, enjoying each moment, living it to the fullest. Maybe through all this, I am being prepared and taught to open my heart, myself and finally my mind to a relationship with a man – that elusive Mr. Darcy, that at the moment I have no need for him because my two doggies take up my time, my energy and fill my days and thoughts. Who knows what the years ahead will bring … but maybe I am a little more prepared. Thank you for continuing to think about me, for always seeing that child-like hope I had, which remains unfulfilled.
It has been such a long time since we last saw each other – I think there’s a little reunion in the making. I hope we can see each other again.
      Big hug, May x

  12. I don’t know you personally but I have been drawn to your posts, as I too, have a Cockapoos. I always enjoy reading your blog in finding out what you, Miss Darcy and George are up to. I just wish that I was able to take my four-legged children as many places as you are able to. I think dogs are much more welcome in Europe Than in US.

I just want to encourage you to keep on, keeping on!?❤️ Why do you care what others think of YOUR life? It looks Fabulous, to me!? Georgie and Ms. Darcy are lucky kids.

  13. The beat of Heart is important, and if it happens to be wrapped up in loving dogs, so be it. What would it be like if you couldn’t come home to those wonderful welcomes, or reach out and touch that warm furry body at night.

  14. Don’t feel that way. I can’t remember who said it but someone said “what’s others think of you is none of your business”: I like that, it reminds me not to care. I love My pooch and she brings me and my hubby lots of joy. I won’t apologise for it, nor make excuses for it. I cannot stand football, yet some people travel across the world to follow their team, it seems bonkers to me, but that’s their thing. If others don’t understand that’s their issue, not yours. You keep on loving and sharing your lovely adventures! 🙂

  15. This brought tears to my eyes! For two dogs to be loved so much by their owner is a gift. You have been blessed with Darcy and George and they with you! Isn’t it amazing that some people can make us feel bad for being loving dog parents. More people need to take a stand against animal abuse rather that animal love.
I enjoyed visiting and cuddling with your pups! Hope to see you again soon!
    Sian
