Dog First Aid

More Than Just a Kit

A first aid kit isn’t just for emergencies.

It’s about being prepared before an emergency happens.

Whether you’re heading off on a road trip, exploring the countryside, spending the day at the beach, or simply walking around your local neighbourhood, accidents and minor injuries can happen when we least expect them. A cut paw, a thorn, an insect sting, a torn nail, or a sudden illness can quickly turn an enjoyable day into a stressful one.

When that happens, the last thing you want is to be searching for supplies or wondering whether you have what you need.

That is why I think every dog owner should consider having a dedicated first aid kit.

The James & Ella First Aid Kit was created with exactly this in mind. Developed alongside family veterinarian Dr. Mark Ames and expert canine first aid trainers, it contains the essentials needed to help owners respond calmly and confidently while seeking veterinary advice when necessary.

What I particularly like is that it isn’t simply a collection of items in a bag. The kit also includes a practical booklet to help owners understand how and when to use the contents.

But while the tools inside are important, the most valuable thing in any first aid situation isn’t actually in the kit.

It’s knowing your dog.

Knowing what’s normal. Knowing when something feels off. Knowing when they aren’t quite themselves.

Every dog has their own baseline. Their energy levels, appetite, habits, breathing, and behaviour are unique to them. Understanding that baseline allows us to recognise subtle changes before they become more serious concerns.

Sometimes it is the smallest changes that tell us something isn’t right.

And because you know your dog better than anyone, it is important to trust what you see.

The first aid kit provides the tools. The booklet provides guidance.

But your bond with your dog provides the instinct.

Together, they can help you feel more prepared for whatever comes your way.

Below is everything included in the James & Ella First Aid Kit:

Because caring for our dogs goes beyond feeding them well.

It means being prepared, staying observant, and having the confidence to act when our dogs need us most.
