While this time of the year is filled with festive cheer, there is an underlying shadow of sadness for many and for various reasons. Sometimes, it is melancholia, and at other times, it can be loneliness.
Two years ago today, it was a regular December day, and we were gearing up for Christmas when a routine walk led us to a vet visit. From there, things started to unravel. I never thought we would utter the words “living with cancer.” It was the day our lives changed on a dime—or, in our case, on a pee.
Darcy survived a splenectomy and she held on to give us one last Christmas and New Year’s together. She held on for four weeks and one night she gave me that look – it was time to let her go.
Eighteen months on Darcy brought Lulu to me. In a session with an animal communicator, with the hopes of finding out what Lulu had to say, instead Darcy intervened with a message – it was time to let her go. She will always be with me but I needed to be present for George and Lulu.
There have been evenings when I sat watching telly with George and Lulu on either side of me, or in bed with those two cuddle bugs by my side, I have found myself imagining what it would be like to have the three of them there. Now and Then, those tears still come.
We met Sam Toft at a Wild at Heart Foundation auction event in November where she generously donated some of her works to raise money for the charity. We are lucky winners of one of her ceramics.
At the event, she did quick sketches of the doggies. This was one of George and Lulu – their ears flying as they went on a day out.
Little Lulu got lots of hugs from Sam. So did George!
And I told her how Lulu came about, that Darcy sent her. A few weeks later, we received this drawing in the post. It caught me by surprise … and brought on the tears.
Life is never always how we want it to be but sometimes art can help depict how we imagine it to be. Because “Imagination can take you anywhere.”
