Something we care about … and we were honoured to be asked to speak on behalf of Project Harmless about how we, as dog owners can help in our daily routines, to stop destroying the planet we live in. (Embarking on Sustainability: London Dog Enthusiast’s Quest for a Planet Friendly Lifestyle.)
Together with Anita and Ju-li, we spoke about the importance of doing our part as responsible dog owners to help save the planet in our daily act of picking up after our dog’s poos.
Harmless Poop Bag is made of medical grade, water-reactive, non-toxic, and microplastic free material. It can quickly disintegrate in landfill and our oceans, posing no harm to wildlife and the planet.
What is a Harmless Poop Bag? Harmless Poop Bag offers a new type of dog waste bag material available to all dog owners. It is uniquely water-reactive and can rapidly disintegrate in landfill or in our rivers and oceans, whilst its formula is 100% non-toxic and microplastic-free, posing no threat to marine life. Once used, it can be placed in any waste bin.
What is Harmless Poop Bag made of? Harmless Poop Bag is made of the same material as some medical pill capsules which dissolve in stomach and are commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry. Project Harmless repurposed the material and engineered it to be strong enough for its purpose of waste collection, but fragile enough to disintegrate rapidly in the presence of water, particularly with agitation, such as in rainfall and the movement of rivers.
What makes Harmless Poop Bags unique and harmless? All conventional dog waste bags, including conventional compostable and biodegradable bags, are designed to be water resilient. Harmless Poop Bag is the opposite, incorporating water-reactive material in order to guarantee harmless disintegration.
Approximately 10% of all general waste plastic worldwide ends up in our rivers and oceans. As a result, an estimated 100 million marine animals die each year from contact with plastic in the oceans. If a Harmless Poop Bag ends up in our waters, it will rapidly disintegrate in our seas and oceans.
Unlike conventional bags, it will not ensnare marine life. In addition, if ingested by marine life, the non-toxic and micro-plastic free material will safely pass through the systems of most marine animals, and will not endanger marine life or the human food chain.
In conclusion, unlike all other dog waste bags which are designed to be water-resistant and robust, Harmless Poop Bags are designed to leave the Earth as soon as possible after use without harming it in the process.

May’s comment: There are many little things we can do in our every day lives that can reduce pollution and minimise our environmental impact that is crucial for the health of the planet.
By now we know most of the basic things we can all do –
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Minimise waste by using reusable items instead of disposable ones and recycle materials such as paper, glass, plastic, and metal.
- Conserve Water: Use water-saving appliances, be mindful of not letting water run
- Save Energy: Use energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs, turn off lights, electronics, and appliances when not in use, unplug chargers and devices when they’re fully charged.
- Choose Sustainable Transportation and be mindful of carbon footprint: Use public transportation, carpool, bike, or walk. Consider hybrid or electric vehicles and plan trips efficiently to reduce fuel consumption. Cut down on air travel or choose direct flights.
- Plant Trees and Support Green Spaces: Contribute to maintaining green spaces in your community.
- Use Eco-Friendly Products: Choose products with minimal packaging, select items made from recycled materials.
- Properly Dispose of Hazardous Materials: chemicals, batteries, electronic waste
- Support Environmentally Responsible Companies: Choose products and services from companies committed to sustainability.
- Reduce Plastic Usage: Avoid single-use plastics, use your own reusable bags, water bottles, and containers.
- Contribute to Clean-Up Efforts: Dispose of litter properly and encourage others to do the same.
By incorporating these habits into our daily lives, all these small individual actions collectively make a significant impact to a healthier and more sustainable planet.
And one of the small things I can do as a dog owner is to care about the poop bags that I use every day, a few times a day – which contributes to the state of the world environment. With an estimated 13million dog owners in the UK – that is a great impact.
Before we were introduced to Project Harmless last year and learnt about their Harmless Poop Bags, I had for the longest time what I thought was doing our part, until I learnt the truth about the various options. To learn more about the differences, listen to one of the founders, George Greer’s interview.

We are trying in our small way to help save the planet.
