When we heard that Raffles Hotel was opening in London, it immediately brought back fond memories of enjoying a Singapore Sling at the original Raffles Singapore, both years ago and more recently in March.
And at our recent staycation there with Margaret, it was truly special to re-live a Singapore Sling moment with Margaret, just as we did almost 40 years ago!
A Historical Rebirth
Raffles London at the OWO (Old War Office) building marks the revival of a significant historical and architectural landmark in the heart of London. Formerly Britain’s iconic Old War Office, this magnificent Grade II* Edwardian Baroque building in Whitehall was designed by William Young and has a rich military history, serving as the headquarters for the British Army and the War Office, playing a crucial role during both World Wars.
Since its inception in 1906, the building had never been accessible to the public until September 2023. A meticulous six-year restoration has transformed The Old War Office into a luxury hotel and residential complex. Operated by Raffles, the hotel boasts high-end accommodations, restaurants, bars, and a spa.
A Grand Arrival
Upon arrival in the courtyard, you’re immediately struck by the ornate facades, domes, and the grandiose, elaborate style of the building.
The restoration has preserved many of the building’s original features, such as marble staircases, oak paneling, and intricate plasterwork, while seamlessly integrating modern design elements.
Every day, there’s a guided tour of the building by the amazing concierge/historian where stories of notable figures, including Winston Churchill, T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), and Ian Fleming (creator of James Bond), are shared. These illustrious personalities worked in the building at various times.

Prime Location
Situated in Whitehall, the OWO is in close proximity to major London landmarks, including Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament, and Buckingham Palace.
Memorable Staycation
We had a delightful time during our recent staycation with Margaret of Kitchen Chat. The hallway leading to the rooms was resplendent in bright reds, reminiscent of the Horse Guards uniform frequently seen across the road from the building.
There’s a Canine Menu for in-room service that has been approved by Archie Le Woof, Chief Dog Officer, whom we had the privilege of meeting along with his owner, Phillipe, the MD of Raffles at The OWO.
And look at those The OWO Raffles spiffy dog bed and bowls!
Though we had already experienced the dog-friendly hospitality of Raffles with an afternoon tea in The Drawing Room with our friend Sydney, we had to relive our Afternoon Tea experience with Margaret.
We had also previously enjoyed lunch with Alison at Saison, a relaxed Mediterranean all-day dining venue inspired by the Riviera and masterminded by Mauro Colagreco. Breakfast was also served there, and dogs are welcome.
The Guards Bar, just a few paces from Horse Guards in the heart of Whitehall, served cocktails and spirited tipples. It was here that we indulged in a Singapore Sling, accompanied by George and Lulu.
There is a total of nine restaurants and three bars. We were able to dine at three of the restaurants and had drinks at one of the bars.
A Rich Heritage
The OWO building and Raffles Hotel both boast rich heritages.
The original Raffles Hotel in Singapore, established in 1887 by the Sarkies Brothers, was named after Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel is famous for being the birthplace of the Singapore Sling, a cocktail created in 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon.
Raffles Hotel’s enduring legacy is a testament to its unique ability to blend historical grandeur with contemporary luxury, offering guests an unparalleled experience that celebrates both its rich past and vibrant present.
